Another year. Another birthday. Another disappointment. No, that was unfair. Niamh had never been the disappointing child of the O’Connor’s. That was all Cael and she hated that for him. She hated that people didn’t always see him trying and that he was just different then herself or Quinn. But, she, like anyone else who was scared of disappointment from those you love, often held her tongue. Which was why she had held her tongue about failing her Auror examination. Well, to put it as the letter had said, “at this time, we are going in a different direction.” Was she still bitter about the moment? Yes. Was she expecting to be celebrating this birthday with a “newbie” title instead of just her same old secretary title? You better believe it. Yes, she was still upset about this, though she wasn't showing it so much on the outside.
It was DORIAN TULLY who suggest, neh, insisted that she go out for her birthday. She’d finally admitted to everyone who mattered she wasn’t going to be an Auror. Many people said she could take the test again, but she had a feeling it may not change the outcome. Niamh new better of herself. She knew she had aced the written test, she had studied for it again and again and then again some more. She knew that she had done well in the simulation test. So, the only thing that held her back had to be some bureaucracy internally.
Though she had told everyone else she did not know why they had passed on her, she was certain she had figured it out. It came back to the incident a few weeks prior where there was a big accidental magic and no field agent to send to the site right away. So, what had she done? The only thing she could figure out to do when literally nobody, including her boss @tancred was in the office. She had gone instead. She had not been perfect, and her actions required some additional clean up, but she had freaking tried to do the best she could. She was pretty sure that was why she was left out of the new trainees recruitment.
Bureaucracy.
So, naturally, she was at the bar getting a round of shots at the bar for the group. She handed over her ID and the bartender smirked. “Birthday eh?” She nodded with her lips together. “Yup, good catch,” she said. “This round is on us then.” A small smile crossed her lips. “Well, thank you, very, very much,” she said with a wink. If only she were into men, she might have meant that wink with a little flirtation.
Instead she gathered he shots to return to the group. “See, I told you it was a good idea for me to go. These were all free!” she told Dorian nudging him with her elbow after the alcohol was securely placed on the table. She then noticed a new face in the group. “You’re TJ, right?” she asked. “Dorian won’t shut up about you, honestly, I think he’s in love, you better watch out.” She flashed a teasing grin at Dorian, but she was not disappointed in TJ either. She was, intrigued. “Here’s to growing old and getting wrinkly!” she said raising her shot as the others followed. “Whooo!” That tequila was strong. “Anyone want to play one of the games here? Giant Jenga?”
