How did your character acquire this ability?: Zuri's paternal grandmother is a metamorphmagus.
Thanks to very old family drama, she grew up without said relative being invited to any family gathering. It was far from clear to her what had happened when she was younger; and even now, she has a muddy impression of it from things she's heard. But the outcome was that she very much had to learn by herself about her abilities and controlling them as a child. There was no one else she was related to, with the ability.
There were a great number of mishaps and lapses in controls. It could be a big distraction for herself and others. Though she generally rolled with it and laughed it off, or learned to.
When she was a teenager, she began to write in secret to her grandmother. Eventually she managed to plan and even begin to infrequently make visits to her. And as much as she'd learned a lot through trial and error, she quizzed her once she made contact with this single relative that had the same ability.
