Maddy winced as he reached up to touch the side of his face. The blow was still tender, and the message had been pretty clear (even though his vision currently wasn't.) It had been the same message that had been sent to his mentor, Esteban. Of course, Maddy hadn't heeded the message and attempted to keep business afloat... minus the new tax that had been imposed. Some burly German and his posse had thought it was time to amend the previous terms.

Right now, Esteban was laid up in a hospital bed in St. Mungo's, eating most of his meals through a straw as some Skele-gro regrew his teeth. At that point, the deal had been pay the tax or move along. Though, now, because Maddy had decided to circumvent the tax, it was pay double, or pay to buy their way out. After today, Julian didn't need to be told what the consequences of not paying at all would be.

The bartender slid a new glass of firewhiskey in front of him as well as a cold bottle of beer. Maddy downed the firewhiskey in a single gulp and then brought the cold bottle to the side of his face, again wincing upon contact. Where was he going to get 10,000 Galleons by Friday? Not even Julian Devereaux could manage that sort of turnaround in only a few days.

There was a word to describe Ziporah's current existence, that word was monotonous. Monotonous is defined as dull, tedious, and repetitious; lacking in variety and interest. She liked to believe there was a certain level of interest about what she did. In reality there was, but for her, things had grown very repetitious and boring rather quickly. There were only so many events for one to plan and clients for one to escort before the days and nights began to overlap with the same characters just wearing different faces. There was still a certain level of enjoyment and self fulfillment, but there was also something that seemed to be missing. Ziporah craved the unexpected in a form different from a bride catching cold feet or an escort client ending the night in a drunken rant before their business partners. After a while, even that which was traditionally seen to be unexpected and shocking had become the norm too. This left her no place but stuck in a cycle of repetition, a cycle she sought to break that day by attempting to do something different.

Instead of eating in the same places that she frequented often, Ziporah had decided to make her way to the Leaky Cauldron. Her eyes held a longer glance at the entrance of the pub than it did her usual restaurants of choice. This wasn't a matter of style, it was instead a matter of going out of the norm into the unexpected. Ziporah liked a sense of pattern and order, even though she did rather well with handling the unexpected when it presented itself. It was just that with all of the work she'd been doing, she hoped to get a bit of revival from her break. This included things like actually enjoying what she would eat and having decent service. At the Leaky Cauldron she had no clue how the food was lately, nor did she know what their service was like, unless she decided to judge off of the many years between her last visit to the pub. Regardless of her minor reserves, this was a day to try something somewhat new and she was doing just that.

As she stepped into the pub she instantly noticed the place to smell different from what she was used to. There was a variety of smells, mostly the smell of food remained dominant above the other scents competing for her nostrils attention. There was a hint of something intertwined with all of the smells that gave her a sense of hope for the hunger that had started gnawing at her moments prior. She wondered how she would identify that specific smell when placing her order. Mentally she imagined her and the server going back and forward trying to determine which smell she was referring to. She would probably try to determine what it was for herself. Ziporah was good with describing things but it would certainly take some effort on the servers part to catch on as well if they were to be successful. She ultimately decided to sit at the bar. She figured she could at least ask someone for recommendations if they couldn't help her identify the specific smell that interested her.

"Excuse me...Is someone sitting here?"

At her current angle she could only identify the figure before her as being a male and one of color. He gave off a mysterious vibe, mostly because of the bottle that he held to his face. Ziporah thought it awkward but figured he could have been in a resting position of choice. As she watched him longer she started to realize that it was, in fact, being held to his face for some reason. It didn't take long for her to realize that he was actually hurt. He was also...someone she knew.

Maddy couldn't decide if the woman's voice was a healthy distraction from his current woes, or simply a distraction. Part of him thought it could be opportunity to knocking. Though, what could a woman frequenting the Leaky Cauldron possibly have that he could exploit? It wasn't that Maddy was proud that the idea had come to mind, but desperate times called for desperate measures.

"No, it's... free," he said as he turned slightly. And as he shifted in his seat slightly and turned to look at the owner of the voice, Maddy instantly found himself almost in a state of shock.

Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine. Well, it technically wasn't his, but it was certainly somewhere he thought he'd never see Ziporah Laurent. This was certainly a blast from the past. Back at Hogwarts, he'd always harbored quite a crush on Ziporah, though he knew better than to act on it.There was simply too great a chance that she would have died from laughter right on the spot. Besides, they were from very different worlds, and looking at her now, he could see that it was more true now than it had ever been.

"Um... please, have a seat," he said. He had lowered the bottle from the side of his face as he gestured at the vacant seat. His mind had forgotten about the stinging wound for the moment, clearly distracted by present company. Instead, he was more focused on not being rude and coming off as s tool. He stood from his seat and waited to see if she'd accept the offer. After all, none of his problems were hers and that's the way he aimed for it to remain.

Unbeknownst to Ziporah, the unexpected had found her that day in the Leaky Cauldron. A distraction found her ears in the form of the entrance door slamming rather hard, and within seconds her eyes left the man and made their way toward it. She jumped a bit when it happened, slightly revealing her mild discomfort with the location that she'd convinced herself would bring about a sense of nostalgia. She mentally brushed it off and struggled to smile through what felt like a dropped heart struggling to return to its proper location. Between the slamming door causing her to jump and the mysterious man holding a bottle to his head, Ziporah was beginning to realize that she'd become out of touch with her ability to adapt to most environments with ease.

The past year had been so full of way too many weddings, gala's, and events for the elite. So much luxury and expensive taste had found its way into her eyes by this point. This was ok for the most part, especially for business, but only as long as it didn't take away from who she really was. Ziporah never wanted to become someone she wasn't, and that was her work, becoming whomever she was serving so that their vision could come to life. But her work was only supposed to be temporary, so why did their lifestyles seem so engraved in her personality now? Ziporah was even more adamant about doing something new now. Despite realizing that she would rather be fine dining at some new restaurant, maybe BENITO O'LEARY 's Benzel's, she had made her way into the seat before her with a fresh sense of purpose: to refined her roots, the roots that existed before she had become so immersed in the world of the elite.

"Thank you," stated Ziporah as she placed her purse upon the wooden counter in front of her. She had one mind to remove it, seeing how her purse was a lighter color and thoughts of blemishes arose within her mind. Nevertheless, Ziporah allowed it to remain as she tried to do what the old her would do, to just relax. Prior to becoming a somewhat successful event planner, Ziporah didn't really care about brands and lifestyles. As long as she was happy and healthy she was fine. Surely she was making this all out to be a bigger thing than it actually was. But to be safe, she consciously decided to take the paths less traveled that day.

Next step: conversation with the random male that was awkwardly holding a bottle to his head.

"So...Is there anything you would rec—" Ziporah was interrupted by the dark, in her eyes, puppy-like eyes starring back at her. She was about to ask him if he recommended anything, but apparently she had a whole new set of questions for the male she recognized as being an old school mate. "Winston...Wait. She opened it and allowed it to hang as she shook it allowing the contents to escape to the floor. She didn't really care about being proper at the moment more than she did being helpful. He was hurt. Couldn't people see that?

"Bartender...May I please have some ice?" asked Ziporah with a hint of urgency in her tone. She watched the bartender until she realized they had every intention of taking their time. This annoyed her, but she couldn't do anything about it at this point. To distract herself from her growing frustration she looked at Winston, mostly to determine just how bad his face was, though this didn't help calm her or the way the sores made her flesh crawl in her skin. That had to hurt. "Winston what happened?" asked Ziporah, her eyes a bit narrow as she imagined the pain he was in. She wanted to comfort him. She was sure he was just playing the strong role as an attempt to be a 'man' about it all. Mentally her eyes rolled within her imaging the many ways this could have come about through some immature decision of his. If only he would have been a more careful.

Wait. Did someone do this to him?

This wasn't how Maddy had wanted any of this to go. Granted, having someone rough you up did put a damper on your day. Though, running into a former crush and have her find you nursing such a wound had been the last thing Maddy had expected. Clearly, this was hardly the time to buy any scratch-offs to try his luck.

She asked the waiter to bring over some ice, and Maddy started to protest, but he was sure that it was falling on deaf ears. "Really, that's... that's not necessary," he tried to explain. "It's just a scratch." Well, that was arguably true, but it hadn't been the result of an accident unless you were going to suggest that Maddy's face had accidentally collided with the other guy's fist.

She then had to go and ask what had happened. He didn't want to lie to her, but telling the truth seemed infinitely worse. "It's... nothing you need to concern yourself with," he stated. Telling Ziporah to not do something was not the way to stop her. Determination had always been a part of her interior makeup, and it didn't seem to be fading anytime soon judging by her actions with Winston. His plea for her to leave him to his wounds only made her want to heal him more. She wasn't a healer, but she believed in her plan. Her plan was one of relief more than an actual healing for him. One could even venture as far to say that she wanted to save him, that is if there was something to be saved from. These weren't conscious thoughts in her mind, but they were feelings, emotions etched deep within her that she couldn't ignore now that she was faced with a friend in need. Had she been led there that day by some greater power? She didn't know specifically what he needed, if it ventured past the wounds upon his face and into something deeper and more revealing of his current life. No matter what it was, time didn't remove her friendship just because it managed to separate them for a few years.

Like a politician Winston switched the subject as an attempt to deflect from the real issue at hand. Ziporah had been in planning long enough to know when someone wasn't interested in a thing. The thing that Winston wasn't interested in was facing the truth, or at least he wasn't interested in facing the truth with her. Ziporah wasn't offended by this. After all, it had been a few years since they shared even the slightest form of a personal conversation. Ziporah leaned against the bar with her left forearm and allowed her right arm to hang over the chair as she faced Winston. Her face was blank with a hint of seriousness to it. She needed him to understand that she wasn't falling for his game. However, she also wasn't forcing him to share anything he didn't feel comfortable sharing. She respected his privacy enough to give him that, even if it hurt her that he didn't feel he could trust her enough to share. Wow, time really did a number on their friendship.

Finally, the bartender came with the ice. She poured it into the baggy, cupping it in her hand after to be ensure it didn't have any jagged edges that would produce discomfort when applied. With the cold bag in her hand, now wrapped in a couple napkins, she decided to speak her peace. "You're hurt Winston, and you need help. It's ok to need help. It's not ok to try and run a game on me when we both know you don't want to tell me the truth, and that's fine; i'm not pressuring you to share anything you don't want to. All I ask is that you just let me help, that's all." Ziporah's eyes lit up with her concern as she ended her words hoping they would reach a deeper place than his hard head. At that moment she moved her hand forward to rest the ice upon his cheekbone where the gash was. Her other hand moved to his arm where she attempted to rest it for a sense of stability as she leaned forward to tend to him. All she wanted was for him to get better. Couldn't he see that?

This wasn't exactly the sort of riveting conversation Maddy had been hoping for should he ever find himself sitting opposite Ziporah Laurent. Ziporah had forgotten how much patience it took to deal with Winston sometimes. The machismo had seemed to grow with his age, an unfortunate trait during times like this when all one could see was blood and bruises. With one hand she wanted to smack some sense into him, knock the hell out of him, helping him to see that someone was there to help him, and without judgment, whatever it was that he had gotten himself mixed up in. On the other hand, Ziporah had one mind to let him sit in the mess that she didn't know if he made or had just found himself in. She really didn't know if she would be justified in going off on him for being the same hard-headed boy that she'd met years back at Hogwarts. This was probably the main reason why she simply sucked her teeth silently with her arms crossed for a moment, thinking. Her cheeks were slightly sunken in as she watched him, mostly trying to determine what to do with him.

With a deep breath Ziporah exhaled her frustrations with him and then she reached her hands out to rest upon his forearm, a comforting gesture she hoped would help. "Winston," she started to speak, this time more calmer and not allowing her fears to get the best of her and show so easily. "I know you would love it if I turned from here and acted like I saw an old buddy from school that's doing well. And to leave here feeling like everything is ok, but I can't. Something is not right and I know it. You know I've always had a good instinct about things...So, don't push me away now when I may be able to help. Jus--Just let me in and i'll decide for myself if I can handle it. Don't treat me like the Ziporah you knew because i'm not that innocent girl anymore, ok?" Ziporah finished, her eyes now slightly watered because of the emotion attached to their past. For a moment she saw herself as the girl that once looked at him believing he could do anything. Now, though she didn't know all the facts, she was looking at him seeing what looked like the absolute opposite of what she believed he could do: succeed.

He really didn't want Ziporah involved at all, but clearly she wasn't going to settle for anything less than the truth. His mind raced for an excuse, but somehow it felt that pushing her away would only make his day worse. Perhaps in this instance the truth would be what actually scared her off. At least he'd have the peace of mind of knowing that she'd be okay.

Ziporah had grown up in a rather well off home. They weren't a rich family, as some would explain being rich. But they were well off in comparison to most. Ziporah could remember having anything she wanted just as long as she could prove she would be able to be responsible for it upon getting it. Usually, her proving responsibility consisted of her writing an essay detailing how she would care for whatever she was asking for. The fact that she had to write an essay to get what she wanted spoke volumes to the type of support that she had at home and the values that her parents wished to instill in her while rarely telling her the word no. Unfortunately, Winston hadn't been blessed with the same sort of upbringing. Her memories of viewing his struggle in fragments during their youth were of greater clarity now as an adult seeing him before her, wounded and in a great need of help. She couldn't help but wonder where she would be if the roles were reversed. She believed everyone could choose their own path, but disadvantages to those paths certainly played a role in who one would become.

"Winston, we can go to the authorities an--" Ziporah's fast paced speech became silent as it met her wealth of knowledge, this mostly from her lacking vault of street smarts. Her mind now recalled every scene she had ever seen where someone suggested going to the authorities, only to then be met with strong disagreement from the endangered. Whoever Winston was dealing with probably wouldn't take kindly to being exposed, something that would put him in greater danger with them knowing his testimony could lead to their being apprehended. There was also the little detail of Winston's part in all this that made her question if he would be incriminating himself by exposing his current foe.

Ziporah had another question, one that would help her determine just how deep this situation really was. Her eyes closed as she hoped for a favorable response that didn't include things becoming worse. "How much money do you owe these people?" she asked, her eyes never moving from him as she was reluctant to hear his response. His answer would determine whether or not she could help him, or if the authorities would be his only solution, second to committing a crime to obtain the money, which she would highly advise against. Ziporah knew not to get involved in things like this, but she couldn't just let his life hang in the balance if she had the power to save him. Winston needed someone in his corner, and though years placed distance in the friendship they once had, Ziporah still saw the same curly haired boy that she was once attached to. The love was still there, clearly it was never really lost.

Ziporah's first reaction didn't surprise Winston at all. He simply stared at her as she made began to make mention of going to the authorities and thought better of it. The fact that she thought like that almost brought a smile to his lips. That she was still detached from the muck that was his world. That she wasn't bothered with the unwritten laws that governed his life. It was something she never deserved to be a part of. He certainly didn't think any less of her because of it. In fact, he admired her for her ignorance. It was almost hopeful that someone could live their lives without having to deal with all that he had to.

Yet, perhaps it was that hope that made her next question sting so much. She was still searching for a way in as she asked him how much he owed them. It was an exorbitant amount for him, but it was possibly manageable for her. Yet, that would only make things worse. If they found out that they could get the money once, they'd most certainly be back for more. And if his world found a way to draw Ziporah in....

"That doesn't matter," said Winston. "The fact is that it's more than I have, and less than they want." Because they would always want more. "Look, it's nice of you to offer, but I'm not going to take your money. Certainly not to give it to them." He shook his head definitively. "Really, don't worry. I'm sure once I get the chance to speak with them, we can reach an understanding."

Ziporah wanted to fish further for a specific figure, but she knew he was right in his assessment of the situation. Had he decided to pay them what they wanted, what was there to keep them from demanding more money from him? She wasn't sure of the figure, but she did know that her support could only last so long if such a scenario were to play out as he suspected. Ziporah took a deep breath as she contemplated her next steps in helping him fix this. It wasn't her mess to fix, and clearly he didn't want her hands anywhere near it. However, for some reason she couldn't just leave the establishment knowing that his life was still in danger; she had to do something. "I don't like the sound of that. What if this understanding ends up being your body in a bag?" She asked bluntly, really wanting him to realize that his life was worth more than his pride. He needed help from someone, and fate had recomposed them in this moment for a reason.

"Winston, I can't just walk away from this knowing you're in danger. I just won't." Ziporah looked at him directly, her disappointment with the situation displaying on face. "Have you had to negotiate with them before?" she asked, hoping that he wasn't basing his life on anything except past experiences that showed their willingness to have mercy in these situations. She could at least cope with knowing that he was familiar with the way that they operated with his inability to pay his debts. If this was someone new that there was no experience to draw from, that would only further exacerbate the worry that framed a deadly picture in her mind. She didn't know how just yet, but she knew she wouldn't rest until he was in the clear with this all. She just couldn't accept the mystery of this all looming over her for the rest of her life until she ran into him again or the story of his demise showed up in the papers.

No, these blokes would be much more efficient and obliterate any trace of evidence of Winston's existence all together. Of course, he knew better than to tell Ziporah that. Especially, when she stated that she couldn't walk away knowing that he was in danger.

The last thing Winston wanted was for Ziporah to worry, however it seemed that neither his words nor his actions had alleviated her fears. He paused a moment, considering his words carefully as she asked if he had ever negotiated with these people before. In all honesty, they weren't the type of people that negotiated. However, Winston had yet to find a situation where ultimately his silver tongue and natural charisma hadn't served him well.

"Listen," he began, "I've stared down the ends of wands and knives before, and I'm still here." He did his best to offer a reassuring smile. "This isn't anything new to me. Everything is going to work out. Okay?" He rested his hand on hers to reassure her. He didn't want to lie to her, which was why he was hoping she would simply find comfort in his words and not try to pry them apart. One way or another, things would work out as they would. He'd certainly been in situations like this, but not with these people before. Still, Winston was rather clever, and he wasn't prepared to concede defeat just yet.

Her eyes studied him as he explained that it wasn't his first rodeo with life or death situations. Deep within his eyes she could see the same daring teenager that she once knew so much greater than the man before her now. Though time had a lot more to reveal, Ziporah certainly didn't see a career in fortune telling anytime soon. She knew better than to try and take him on as some sort of project, which was what she wanted to do. Deep down she knew better; she couldn't fix him, only he could change the course of things. She did want to be there, to see him escape this all and to make sure he didn't continue down the same path he was on, constantly fearing for his life due to reckless deals and decisions. Years separated them at this point, but a sense of fate seemed to draw her in closer to the man she sat looking at.

Her disappointment with his shutting her out of the situation showed on her face for a moment. Then, as if she'd had a change of heart, a faint and reluctant smile stepped into play. "Ok...I believe you," said Ziporah hesitantly, mostly acting the part of the gullible friend though she knew she wasn't fully convinced. Deep down she wondered if he would live to see her again, something she realized was a desire of hers for no clear reason at the moment except wanting to see him alive and well, after the fact. "But you owe me too. I want a dinner at some place nice, and you better be there or i'm showing up in the afterlife looking for you, and that's after I find whoever offed you," said Ziporah, her face playfully serious though there wasn't a joking bone in her body. Her humor faltered as her concern blew in the air once again. "Are you sure you have this, Winston?" she asked one last time, hoping that if he didn't he would confess it sooner than later, before things were at the point of no return.
