THE SECOND DECREE

WHY MUGGLES AND WIZARDS SHOULD STAND IN SOLIDARITY

The Minister of Magic has released a second decree, that all muggles who were not aware of magic before 2032 will be obliviated. The Minister states this decree is to keep our people safe from witch hunters.

However, statistically showing, you are more likely to be bitten by a dog as you foolishly stick your hand over the fence ignoring the “Beware of Dog” sign then you are to encounter a witch hunter. Estimates for numbers of witch hunters are low, leaving the question, should the masses be blamed for the actions of a few?

Historically, the answer to this question has gone both ways. While there have been encampments around the world of people for having a certain heritage, religion, or different culture.

There has also been resistance around the world. When there were wizards who defined themselves as Death Eaters, were all wizards condemned? When sects of religion like Westboro Baptist Church existed as a portion of Christianity, America did not condemn all their Christians for the action so of a few.

While one cannot dismiss the actions of those who call themselves Witch Hunters, it does not mean that all muggles have a vengeance towards wizards. Muggles have learned of wizarding existence in small batches, either by trust of a friend, by having a family member who was a wizard, or through accident before.

While Minister Weasley does speak truth that mass obviations have occurred; one must question her sudden change on the idea when she worked so hard to unite the wizarding and muggle world. One must also question the validity of imposing life changes on an unwilling participant.

One can also not ignore the many good things that have come from the information sharing between muggle and magical worlds.

In many countries, crime rates are down between both muggle and magical crime. The police on both fronts cooperating together has meant more man power on both sides, allowing for arrests to be more seamless and smooth. In Munich, for example, muggles serve at the Ministry and wizards serve on the police force to heighten the bond.

Now is not the time to turn on a group of people because the lottery of their birth says they do not have magical powers. Fair trial and justice for those who have caused injustice is key, but the innocent should be allowed to live their lives in peace. Other action is immoral.
