THE FIRST DECREE
HOLDING TRUE TO HER PROMISES
With the first decree, Hermione Weasley is holding true to her promises of equality for all creatures. As the House Elves have been freed, the wizarding world and the creatures that exist within it are starting the adjustment.
House elves historically have been mistreated by their owners. Prior to the new decree, the only way a house elf would be free from servitude to their master, was to be given an article of clothing. One might find this idea of servitude and slavery far from each other, but where does that distinction really lie? Owners would beat elves for not listening or put them in dreary situations as living in damp dark places.
However, the house elf loyalty has kept many of them in servitude for their masters for many years and even generations. One house elf, Lonni, said, “I did not want to leave my master, but they gave me a sock when the decree came out.”
Upon further investigation, this house elf was not the only one suddenly out of a home and looking for a place in this world. Those that were still employed remained with richer companies, who took a sizable hit adding them to the payroll, but could recover.
Those that were released were more likely with smaller businesses who could not afford to pay their house elves. One business owner stated: “I said they could stay on the property until they can find a job, but I just don’t bring in enough to pay them what the new law requires.”
We looked into the new department too, nicknamed S.P.E.W. a tribute to the S.P.E.W. that @hermione created while still in the walls of Hogwarts. Unfortunately, the only thing the new Ministry office was able to release was that they were here to “assist house elves with employment, housing, and legal representation as needed.” In other words, the slogan from the magical decree released by the Minister.
If the Ministry is unwilling to be transparent, how will the citizens and our newly appointed citizens know if justice is being done or if the Minister just created chaos?
