December
The bells chimed loudly at the end of mass. Marisol stepped outside, and found not the sun waiting for her, but a series of clouds, clearly threatening rain. It was unseasonably warm, and it had proven to be quite rainy this season. Standing on the stairs with her two cousins, Camila and Valentina, the trio of girls emerged from the church. Both her cousins had already finished their lessons with their governesses and were quite interested in obtaining details about this school that Mari found herself whisked away to year after year. Mari was evasive as ever, given vague answers to otherwise simple questions.
As they strolled down the street on their way home, Camila announced to the other two that her father would be making introductions to the man that could be her husband as early as June. Both girls seemed quite intrigued. Passing along a shoppe, the girls all came to a stop as they marveled at a cream lace fabric. It's pattern was exquisite. Mari found herself so entranced by it, that she hadn't noticed her cousins had moved on ahead. It wasn't until a few droplets of rain fell upon her head that she looked up and noticed that she was alone.
The rain began to fall more violently. A gasping shriek fell from Mari's lips at the touch of the cold water upon her skin. She tried to run after her cousins, but took an odd step and twisted her ankle. She tumbled to the ground and instantly reached for her ankle. Sitting in the rain, getting soaked, until some sort of shelter was looming over her. Her eyes soon met those of a young man. She found herself so instantly captured by his gaze, that she missed his hurried introduction. She heard his name, Javier, and he motioned towards another shoppe. Her eyes followed and she saw that it was a physician's. She felt his arms slide under her leg and soon realized what was happening.
As he lifted her into his arms, he began to move towards the physician's office. Once out of the rain, she lowered his jacket from over her head, but kept it draped over herself. He wasn't much older than her. He couldn't be a physician. It wasn't until he placed her in a chair and knelt in front of her that he reminded her that he was only an apprentice, and that his mentor would be along shortly. Though, for time being, Marisol found herself utterly fascinated by this apprentice... Javier. Smiling warmly down at him, her bruised ankle was hardly an afterthought.
