One of the best things about having a best friend was that you could show up at their apartment unannounced and demand attention without it being a strange or unwelcome occurrence. It made boring Saturday afternoons like this one easy to do something about; Lola could just pop over to Marva's.
MAX SANTIAGO probably didn't have any plans, but Lola would rather watch paint dry than spend more time than absolutely necessary with her co-worker (and unfortunately neighbor). Or so she told herself, but no one needed to know. The point was, there was a better—so much better!—option than Max with his nasty pickles and his seemingly endless supply of frozen burritos: Marva.
Marva wasn't working today, and since she hadn't told Lola that she had plans then she probably wasn't doing anything of importance — or she was and had failed to tell Lola about it, in which case Lola had all the more reason to pay her a visit. Keeping secrets? Not on Lola's watch!
Lola changed into a pair of high-waist jeans, a pink top and a black jacket before making her way down the hall to put her Nikes on. She had a mirror in the hallway and she stopped in front of it to fix her hair in a loose bun and apply lipstick; she wanted to go to the coffee shop later and who knows who they might run into downtown.
"Marva! Your favorite person is here!" Lola announced outside Marva's door five minutes later and rapped her knuckles against it. "We're going out to get coffee!"
