“This is where you decided you should date?” The exasperation in Dimitri’s voice was evident. A hint of shock, confusion, and some downright judgement. “But, it’s so hot and gross here.” There were many things that Caleb could explain to Dimitri about life, but the fact that his mother and himself had nearly died in a cave here and that was what had sent them into a passion of “well we nearly died, right?” adventure that night was not something he was ready to talk about. He’d let that kind of talk come from someone else. Heaven forbid he ever had to discuss how passion and sex work with a kid, he might actually disappear forever.
“Well, kiddo, I don’t know what to say. We just did.” Vague and unassuming answers were always better. Caleb didn’t exactly grow up with the most open grandparents, and that showed. He was sure had his parents been around he might have had a different experience, but he had grown up with the elite. If they could see him now they might roll over in their graves, well, that was if they were actually dead. Once he had been moved to his actual godfamily, to the people his parents wanted to raise him, there had been an overload of honesty, sexuality, and confusion for the young boy. The only saving grace was that he got to be at Hogwarts most of the year until he figured out what all that communication and sharing meant to him. Some days he still wasn’t sure he understood all the lessons he learned from the Notara sisters, but he knew that it made him even a little more open than the guarded eleven year old he was when he came to them.
That was probably why Caleb didn’t want to overwhelm Dimitri with the ins and outs of human sexuality. He was ten, not yet ready to experience that, not yet feeling those emotions. Caleb had been exposed to it about his age and he was just confused. It was better to have that kind of talk, with Rachel, when he was older. Caleb was lucky in that regard. All of the children in his life, well, they had real parent figures. Dimitri had Rachel, his biological parent. Lianna had Tate and Noel, the best fathers she could have ever gotten in the situation. Caleb was at least saved by Rachel joining them on the porch.
“Mom, why did this place make you fall in love with Caleb?” Apparently Dimitri wasn’t going to let this one go. Over his head Caleb just raised his eyebrows and gave her a shrug, as though to say - he tried to say it just did, but the kid wanted specifics and perhaps telling him a horror story of their near death wasn’t the best idea. “I think it was mostly the noodles, right Rach?” he said trying to direct the conversation, but also having a little playful moment with his girlfriend. The noodles that might still be in the jungle where they left them when they entered the cavern. “If we knew you were going to critique Borneo when you asked us to take you here, we would have lied and said it was Big Ben or something more local,” he teased Dimitri.
Despite the fact it was a jungle, that they had this house here that had been outfitted as nicely as it could for silly tourists like them, it did make Caleb feel at ease. It was a place that was theirs, and even if they never told anyone else why it was so special to them, it would always be theirs.
