Despite trying his best to sound casual, Aodhan felt anything but. The words felt strange on his tongue and lips and he realised he had never uttered them as a question to a man before. That in itself felt exhilarating but it didn’t mean because Joel was asking such questions that he really was interested. . .he could just be making conversation. All the auror training in the world couldn’t train him to read the minds of other men, Aodhan decided, but it would be a hell of a lot more useful, even in simple situations such as this. Still he figured that any training he could get would soon fly out the window when he had to consider how nervous it seemed to make him, how much pressure he seemed to put on himself to come across as interesting.
It was something that had always been with him, that need to be liked to have attention, and although his attention-seeking had calmed down, the fact that the other man’s smile was making him feel so giddy was enough for him to know that it was still in there, under all the trained discipline, that need to feel like he was a part of something, to be liked. He hoped Joel couldn’t see it, or maybe he did, would it make him interesting to the other man?
”Uh, no. No boyfriend.”
Joel’s voice was steady but Aodhan sensed a slight hesitance to them. Perhaps Joel was like him, not used to saying the term boyfriend in relation to himself. . .or perhaps – and it was this that seemed more feasible – that Joel had just come out of a relationship. Aodhan figured it was the latter because while he himself had a nervous energy, and excitement the other man seemed a lot more settled, more reserved. He seemed quiet but Aodhan wasn’t sure he was a quiet person . . . he smiled despite the way his thoughts had started to race and nodded gently.
Then joel lifted his glass and Aodhan felt the light breath escape his lips as his own smile turned brighter and he raised his own glass to meet Joel’s ”To being young, pretty, and single,” he watched as Joel looked steadily back at him, faltering in drinking his own beer by the look in the other man’s eyes and felt his heart skip a soft easy laugh escaping his mouth as he shook his head faintly muttering, “speak for yourself.” His own eyes holding a bright light as he finally drank down some more of his drink. He felt giddy as he tried to think of something to ask Joel, wondering if he should make his compliment more clear, in case Joel hadn’t registered it.
“So where are you from originally, Joel?” He asked, taking his time over the man’s name, enjoying how it sounded as he caught himself looking him over before biting his bottom lip. Was it too personal a question? He hoped not as he turned a little more towards him.
