Robin was nervous. She stood in front of her mirror holding up shirt after shirt for herself, not certain what she should wear. The pink? The red? Was that too saucy? What message was she trying to send? Robin had picked up her phone thinking she should call and cancel - but what would she even say? “Hi Jack, I can’t come out after all. My wardrobe doesn’t work anymore, though it completely did yesterday. Thanks for the first few dates, but I am just going to crawl under the covers and stay there for the rest of my life, because you know, that’s where it’s okay to be naked all the time and see nobody.”
In short. Dating was hard.
Robin fell on her bed a little dejected, when a soft knock came on the door. “Robs, Jack is here,” her mother called pushing her head into her room. Robin’s eyes grew wide first out of fear and then out of embarrassment that she wasn’t even fully dressed for their date, that he was probably downstairs awkwardly sitting with her father, and that her mother had answered the door. She looked at her watch and checked - no it was early, she had a plan, but her plan was all going out of the window. She was supposed to be ready, feel cute, meet him outside, avoid the parents thing until later, if at all.
“What’s wrong, Robs?” Her mother had sat next to the bed by her with a look of slight concern on her face as she surveyed her daughters look and the room at hand.
“I have nothing to wear anymore.” The very statement made Robin laugh as she waved around at the clothes on the floor. Her mother chuckled too and then put a hand on her daughters own. “I have an idea.” She disappeared for a few minutes and came back with a sheer soft pink shirt. “Wear this over your tank top, and take the black long sweater.”
Robin dressed and looked in the mirror with a shake of her head. “So, simple.” Her mother also held out her hand encouraging Robin to hold out her hand in it was a really soft necklace with a large black pearl on the end of it. “I wore this necklace on my first date with your father,” she explained. Robin smiled and sat again next to her mother giving her a hug. “Thank you, now I need to save Jack before father’s silence gets to him.”
She felt like her stomach was in her throat while she walked down the stairs, hearing slight murmured voices in the living room, Jack attempting to get her father to engage in conversation. He was a silent person, only talking to people he wanted to, and it seemed that his daughter’s date wasn’t really one he wanted to. He would talk to Robin and to their mother, and his life-long friends, but he did not like small talk and felt meeting new people was beyond him.
“Hi,” Robin said feeling gitters rise in her chest. “Sorry, I thought you were coming later, so I wasn’t quite ready yet.” She felt her cheeks flush a little just really taking him in. Robin had met Jack just a few months ago, and it seemed that the initial shock of being asked out by someone as attractive and wonderful as him was not going to wear off anytime soon. He accepted that she was a busy student at the hospital, had to study all the time, still lived at home to save money right now. In short, despite all her attempts to ‘just see where this was going’ she knew she was falling for him. "Ready?"
