As much as he loved being home, he did miss the warm weather. His assignment in Bangkok only lasted a few weeks, but it was a wonderful reprieve from the weather in London. Danny may have grown up in the cold, still running and playing with his friends around the Hogwarts grounds well after the first snowfall, but it was getting harder to acclimatize as he got older. He might have an easier time if he stuck around for a whole winter, but work meant he was always back and forth. Somewhere hot and then some place frigid with no middle ground to prepare him. The greeter at the door must have seen his expression as Danny stood there shivering, trying to turtle most of his head into the warmth of his jacket, because he offered a friendly, "bit chilly today." Danny had chuckled and responded with a quick, "yeah, a little." It wasn't even all that cold. Lower 40s, maybe. He hadn't checked the weather, but nobody else looked as uncomfortable as he did. Bangkok had been a zesty 90 degrees during the day. Danny walked around the city in a t-shirt and shorts, sipping on cold drinks under shaded roadside bars. Now he was in a jacket more suited to the winter months with his hands shoved deep inside the pockets and as close to his body as he could keep them, lest they freeze right off his arms. Now, though, he was saved by the heat inside the museum. The jacket had been discarded, charmed down to a size that could fit into his pocket, and he was happy to peruse the exhibits in comfortable warmth. They'd wandered into the Ancient Greece and Rome section, and Danny was doing his best to not become over-excited to the point where he annoyed his company. Ancient history always thrilled him and his favourite assignments were ones that took him to places where the past was put on display. He liked when places clung to their history instead of burying it under a sea of modern metal and glass. Danny wasn't sure whether Brett found it as engrossing as he did, but she was at least humoring him. At one point he caught sight of a dagger from the Late Helladic III period and Danny stared at it quietly for a few moments with his nose inches from the glass case. Brett's baby chirped behind him, finally pulling his attention from the dagger and back to the company. He gave the baby a warm smile. "I know," he started, speaking directly to her as if she would completely understand everything he said. "It's pretty cool. They say it's from Ithaca. Home of Odysseus, y’know." Danny nodded to emphasize his point. Talking to babies like adults was the way he rolled. He'd done it with Charlie, reading her bits of his writing and treating her as his editing partner when she was just a wee lass, and she turned out wonderfully. Why change his style now? Danny turned his attention to Brett, who had fared much better on the trip to the museum than he. She looked warm. "I'm glad we found time to do something together." They had met years ago when he was still working whatever stories he could get his hands on and Brett was interning at the law office handling the case he'd been assigned to cover. The two went out for drinks after work and had a good time together, but went their separate ways. It wasn't until Danny sent her a picture of something he'd seen on a work trip that reminded him of their date that they reconnected and formed a friendship. They weren't the best of friends, but Brett always "liked" his pictures on social media and they'd text or meet up for coffee whenever their schedules allowed. Once he found out she'd had a baby, he decided it was time for a get-together as soon as she was ready. Danny loved babies. Charlie was nearly grown and sassed him regularly now and, while she was still the light of his life, he did sometimes long for when she was too small to give him flak. The trio wandered a bit, moving to the next pieces in the exhibit. There was a case with coins laid out and Danny perused them casually. "So, how have you been? I haven't seen you in a while," he glanced at Brett's daughter, giving her another smile as he looked. Babies! "How's work?" | |||
