The night had started out like any other night, uncomfortable. Brett could not find a position to sleep in that felt good. This had been happening for most of the last month of her pregnancy, and now that she had passed her due date she felt more and more uncomfortable everyday. She was nearly on bedrest now, much to her own pouting about the situation. Brett was restless in this state. She wanted the child to just come, because without her work to distract her from this discomfort, she was clearly fixating on the things she couldn’t control, like the pain in her lower back that never seemed to go away, even with the cream that KAMRAN CHOWDHURY had given her.
She situated yet another pillow under her back hoping the elevation combined with the stretch might help her get more comfortable, but it just all hurt. Feeling restless, she got out of bed as easily as she could trying not to wake Hunter. She decided if one of them could sleep they should get the option. It did not take Brett long to make herself some tea and stand in the dark of the living room looking out at the city. There were so many people still awake and moving, she remembered when that was her, going out at night and enjoying the time. Or even just still out at this hour because she had been at the office late.
Brett missed the work. With the anticipated due date having come up, her boss insisted she start her leave. Between that and the need to keep off her feet more than she was, she had finally given in. Brett held her belly as she sipped her tea. “Come on little one, please come today.” After a long while on her own, she eventually fell asleep on the couch, in a position that would keep her semi-comfortable.
However, she awoke a little before dawn with a pain in her stomach. It felt like heartburn, but the heartburn was lower than it should be, and for a woman who had experienced heartburn she was aware that it wasn’t right. A few more intervals of this pain later, she realized she was in labor and her wishes had been answered. Though, the labor was intensive, and it had come so fast there was little time to get to the hospital. In fact, it was easier for her to call ROBIN WILEY to come over and help with the delivery, though not her general area of expertise, just as well she trusted her more. It seemed like days went by, though she was luckier than some and it was only a few hours since her body had let her sleep through the start of things, likely due to her pure exhaustion, which she did consider lucky.
“And here is your healthy, beautiful baby.”
Brett burst out crying as she took the infant in her arms. Brett had never been in love with another human being the way she was with this child. She thought that the love she had for Hunter would be the deepest love she could feel, but she was wrong. There was nothing more gratifying than this child in her arms. “You are perfect,” she whispered in through her tears, kissing the baby on top of the head. “Absolutely perfect.”
