Nate stepped on to the empty pitch. The clean-up had already happened, any trace of the spectators who had cried from the seats as each goal was scored, or saved, now gone. Yet there was still a buzz in the air, and it caused a smile to form on his lips.
It was dark so he lit the way with his wand as he strolled around the edge of the pitch, taking in everything, thinking over the match he had just played. One might think that after such a strenuous activity a long walk would be the last thing on Nate’s mind, but he did this after every match. After getting changed and telling the others he would meet them at the bar, he would take as much time as he needed to clear his head. As Captain, he felt it was his responsibility to not let the results of a match sway how he was with his team. He needed to be objective, and having this time to himself allowed him that. He flexed his arm carefully as he walked, it twinged painfully, but he was satisfied it was just a bad sprain, he’d be fine for training come Monday.
As he was coming back he heard someone clear their throat, Nate raised his wand looking ahead. As he neared the entrance of the tunnel to the changing areas, he couldn’t see anyone, but he could feel a change in the air around him. He slowed his pace, wand raised as he continued the instinct to call out being silenced by the idea that he was probably only imagining things.
It was only a split second later, that he heard the faint crack, but before Nate had time to turn, a shadow appeared infront of him, a human shape, face covered. A fist caught his jaw, the power behind it sending Nate spinning back. Hitting the wall of the tunnel with his back, he felt the wind rush from his stomach with another unpredicted punch. Nate scrambled for his wand as it clattered down the tunnel away from him. He reached out but it shot from his reach flying out of the tunnel back towards the pitch. The ball of light in its tip fading to nothing before a foot hard collided with his head
In that moment every other thought in his mind left him and instinctively he reached up covering his head with his hands, forgetting about his injured arm. A searing pain shot down it from his elbow through his fingers but he fought against it as he tried to scramble back to his feet. As soon as he thought he had his feet beneath him, a hand hand gripped his hair and he felt something sharp dig against his throat. The person in the mask held him from behind as he struggled but as the wand dug deeper into his skin Nate could feel the panic and fear cause his body to freeze.
“What do you want?” He gasped, breath catching as he was flung through the air. Another whimper left his lips as his head was slammed against the ground. Stunned and unable to open his eyes, he barely registered the sound of footsteps over the sound of his own heartbeat as it rushed passed his ears. He gulped in air but swallowed a mouthful of blood, chest aching as if something was pressing against it.
“Consider this a warning.” The voice was low, dangerous, only centimetres from his ear. Nate felt an icy hand grip his heart as his eyes stung. He swallowed more blood and he shook his head. “I don’t-,” He gasped, but it was no use. Something was pushed infront of his face. Nate squinted, trying to make sense of the moving image.
Slowly a photograph came into view and the subjects in the photo cause Nate’s eyes to go wide. There he was, clear as day arms wrapped around a guy, kissing him. “You’ve got it wrong-,” he heard himself try, but he was cut off.
“Save it scum, sent your little secret to the Prophet, everyone’ll know just how bent you are come morning.” Nate struggled but the person was pressing all of their weight down on his chest. When he did feel the weight lift finally, he felt his stomach lurch, the vague understanding that he was being flung mid air only dawning before his back hit a wall. His head hit the ground, then nothing.
